    The Baltimore Sun seeks a dynamic, creative, organized editor to help lead the Features department, drive coverage of entertainment and lifestyles topics and execute strategy for online content and social media. This editor plans and assigns content for a multitude of digital and print platforms. 

     

    This is the editor who guides our coverage in areas critically important to The Baltimore Sun’s main readership goals – Coverage/watch-dogging of Maryland state government, Baltimore City Hall, and the politics associated with both. The investigative reporter who has been filling in is needed back at his job in the newsroom. Maryland is in the midst of an important, nationally watched election for governor -- and we face considerable competition from the Washington Post given that our former chief reporter on this has gone to work for them. There is not another editor in the newsroom with the skills or the time to do this job.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist in managing the staff of The Sun's Features department.
    • Assign and edit content for print and online to members of the Features staff and freelance contributors.
    • Supervise and work with staff and freelancers on story and content development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced and compelling.
    • Use expertise and good judgment in assigning the most appropriate content formats: text, video, photo, database, etc.
    • Ensure content is edited quickly for digital distribution followed, potentially, by a print version.
    • Use news awareness and audience metrics/analytics to assign content and determine means of promoting it.
    • Ensure that content is optimized for search engines and social media sharing.
    • Work with the community coordinators and reporter/bloggers to develop story ideas that spark community discussion.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience
    • Minimum five years experience in editing/managing journalists in a digital environment
    • Excellent writing and editing skills
    • Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system. Must work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
    • Must be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and production
    • Professional experience using Web-based social networks
